We are on our own, without a god, and we have to get together, sit down together and decide what kind of society do we want to live in. Do we want to live in a society where people steal, where people kill, where people don’t pull their weight paying their taxes, doing that kind of thing? Do we want to live in a kind of society where everybody is out for themselves in a dog-eat-dog world? And we decide in conclave together that that’s not the kind of world in which we want to live. It’s difficult. There is no absolute reason why we should believe that that’s true - it’s a moral decision which we take as individuals - and we take it collectively as a collection of individuals. If you want to get that sort of value system from religion I want you to ask yourself - whereabouts in religion do you get it? Which religion do you get it from? They’re all different. If you get it from the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition then I beg you - don’t get it from your holy book! Because the morality you will get from reading your holy book is hideous. Don’t get it from your holy book. Don’t get it from sucking up to your god. Don’t get it from saying “oh, I’m terrified of going to hell so I’d better be good” - that’s a very ignoble reason to be good. Instead - be good for good reasons. Be good for the reason that’s you’ve decided together with other people the society we want to live in: a decent humane society. It’s been a while since I’ve read. Yes, it’s just now that I’m gonna take on something that I’ve secretly been wanting to read when I was younger.

And for a change, I visited my family here in Biñan, Laguna! I’ve been working away from home and living by myself now(and is loving it though it’s hard). Drop out of college but not to worry, I think I’ll get back to studying when the time is right.

Punctuation Rule of the Day: Who gives a f*ck about an Oxford comma? Not Oxford University’s branding style guide, which instructs its readers thus:

As a general rule, do not use the serial/Oxford comma: so write ‘a, b and c’ not ‘a, b, and c’.

It should be noted that an exception has been made for sentences where an Oxford comma would “assist in the meaning of the sentence or helps to resolve ambiguity,” such as when “one of the items in the list is already joined by ‘and’.”

FWIW, The Oxford Style Manual continues to promote the usage of an Oxford comma in all cases.

St. George isn’t all that different from her fun-having predecessor: She’s a shallow, carefree, bubbly Barbie with a Lolita edge singing lyrics like “everyone is here and I am having so much fun” to a tune as generic as a bottle of Sam’s Cola. But she does look like Emma Watson, which never hurt anybody. And she can kinda sing.

“I don’t want people comparing and saying she’s the next Rebecca Black,” says Wilson. “With this project, it’s a bit of a different thing.” By “different” do you mean “won’t make listeners want to leap off tall buildings to their untimely demise?” Because that’s certainly a change I’m on board with.

Fighting For The Poor of the Day: The mayor of Davao City, Philippines, has taken a five-day leave of absence after punching sheriff Abe Andres in the face for refusing to postpone the court-ordered demolition of a shanty town where some 217 families reside.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, whose city is still reeling from a deadly flashflood, had requested a two-hour delay to allow her to finish relief work for the needy families, but the demolition went ahead as scheduled. Upon confronting Andres, Duterte-Carpio lost her cool, striking the sheriff several times in sight of TV cameras.

Some in the Philippine Senate, including Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, believe Duterte-Carpio should be sanctioned for her actions, defending the sheriff as having no choice but to carry out the court order or risk being held in contempt. Others have expressed support for the mayor, saying her efforts to safeguard the poor were commendable. For her part, Duterte-Carpio called the incident “unfortunate” and “not my best moment.”

An investigation into possible charges is ongoing.
